Khanfession #7: International Day is my favorite school event. Yeah, there are the scrumptious foods and captivating performances; but, for me, the day is all about outfit-watching. Some people choose to represent the "American" culture (or even Canadian, as one guy told me), but most students are vibrantly dressed in cultural costumes and the sight of them is just something unparalleled. This year, I decided to separate myself from the hoard of Indian clothes and instead went with a traditional Singaporean outfit. The bright blue suit you see me wearing here was originally brought for my sisters by an uncle returning from a trip to Singapore. It has two pieces: a jacket and a skirt. The jacket has a mandarin collar (a short, unfolded stand-up collar) and frogs (an ornamental braiding for fastening). The skirt is actually a rectangular piece of fabric with pleats that is wrapped around and tied to look similar to a pencil skirt. The jacket and skirt reminded me of Western business-wear, so I kept that theme in mind when choosing accessories. In the end, I went with sleek nude pumps, a black briefcase-like bag with gold fastenings, and finished it off with some gold rings to match all of the accented gold. My hijab style for the day was just a plain black scarf dramatically thrown over and cross my shoulders in a manner reminiscent of old Hollywood glam. Details:
