In my four years of wearing hijab, I have found that layering is the quickest path to finding yourself in a modest outfit. If your clothes are feeling tight or a little too short, an outer layer can create a comforting coverage that conceals shape and adds dimension to your outfit.
One of the most obvious things that people notice about my style is that I wear a multitude of colors in a single outfit, something that can often seem difficult to accomplish. But spring is a season deserving of color, so you can try this simple way of adding more color to your wardrobe: wear only neutral pieces, and then add one statement color item.
For this week's outfit, I wanted to highlight this awesome dress-like long vest. It pairs with an Indian shalwar kameez outfit, but I prefer wearing it as its own piece. The vest includes a band collar at the top, arabesque patterns, and wooden beads that stop a third of the way down. The top section is straight, and then the segments flare out in a way that creates great movement when walking.
Enjoy the last installation of my "Wedding Weekend" outfits set! (Check out parts one and two if you haven't already)
Welcome to the second part of my "Wedding Weekend" outfit compilation! The second day of the wedding also included the henna celebration. In some traditions, the guests are supposed to wear a green color that is similar to that of henna leaves. Thus, I chose this occasion to wear a green and gold gharara. The gharara is a traditional garment originating from the Uttar Pradesh, region of India where my family is from, and consists of a veil, tunic, and silk brocade wide-legged pants that are flared from the knee.
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending my cousin's wedding. Indian weddings tend to have many components, and thus take a few days to fulfill all of the exciting traditions that weddings entail for both the groom's and the bride's families. With so many events, I was given the opportunity to wear a few varying sets of outfits that reflect and celebrate Indian fashion. The first event of the weekend was the Nikah ceremony. This is the religious aspect of the marriage and takes place in a masjid, or mosque, for Muslim families. We were able to witness the bride and groom choose each other at the time of their wedding vows and take in the beauty of the Middle Eastern art that the building contained. There was an embroidered tapestry hanging on one wall, tile mosaics on the flooring, and a border of Arabic calligraphy that wrapped around the main hall.
I had lots of fun this Thursday celebrating my seventeenth birthday with my friends and family. The most important part of it all for me was, of course, the birthday outfit. I went with a pale blue crop top with silver beading worn over a simple black maxi dress. Hidden under the dress are some heeled booties just to add some height to the already tall visual of my dress. I decided to go for something simple but classic with a hijab style that was just thrown over one shoulder. The dark purple color of the scarf contrasted the light color of my top while still providing something other than the already present black.
Maxi shirt. Dress over pants. Whatever else you choose to call it, it's a fad less familiar to the average consumer of fashion, and more well-known among those who are familiar with the trends of high fashion, which is more based on runways and red carpets. The style is based off of the kameez and kurtas of Indian clothing, with its central characteristics being the long tunic and the slit sides.
The second our color-coordinated agendas tell us that fall has, in fact, officially begun, every fashionista begins the search for the quintessential fall outfit. Sure, there are those who chase pumpkin spice lattes and cinnamon scented candles, but the allure of finally being able to wear your unnecessarily large collection of boots is something one does not simply resist.
Khanfession #9: This dress is old enough to have its own bachelor's degree.
It was originally my mom's, and thankfully she liked it too much to get rid of it. One day, she brought out this magnificent dress from wherever it was hiding, and my sister and I automatically scrambled to make our claim on it. My sister won. After spending some time in her closet, hidden from the world, she decided to hand it over, knowing I would do it justice. Khanfession #8: Blue is my favorite color...
...and when I saw this beautiful sky blue top, I went a little crazy. Within 30 seconds, I had planned 5 outfits that I could wear with it. It's cropped at the bottom, but still offers some modesty in its loose fit and elbow-length sleeves. I really wanted to make the light color pop, so I wore it with an all black outfit. I like how the silky material and detailed beading were a little dressy, but the loose silhouette of the outfit overall kept things casual. |
